Papaya, Mango and Spinach Smoothie

Alternative title: That awkward moment when you buy a random fruit because it looks awesome but realise when you get home that 1. You have no freaking clue what you’re looking at, 2. You have no idea how to even Google it as “kinda looks like a butternut squash but not quite” doesn’t work and 3. You have no idea what to even do with it…

I must have come across like a right dip-stick standing in the supermarket squealing at a box of fruits I had never encountered first hand before, I’m sure I was given a wide berth and some right weird glances…but it was totally worth it. Even the concerned mutterings of staff as I whispered to fruit in a manner reminiscent of Gollum, it was worth it all.

“Papaya my precioussss….”

First things first, look at this awesome thing:

Papaya

Papayas are a fabulous source of Vitamin C, Folic Acid (Folate), Potassium and dietary fibre…They also taste pretty yummy too!

Seriously…Just look at it:

Papaya 2

I love this colour! Beautiful…

Anyway, onto the smoothie.

Throw 1 handful of Spinach, 1/2 chopped Papaya and 1 chopped mango into a jug/container.

Papaya, Spinach and Mango

In which my thumb makes an appearance.

Add 380ml liquid – again I picked water but I’m sure this would be lovely with almond or coconut milk (if anyone tries it, let me know!).

Then blend…

Papaya, Spinach and Mango 1

I really wasn’t expecting it to be this…green!

…And enjoy!

PS – How was it the last “Inside No 9” in season 2 last night?  Sigh…Hoping for a season 3! Withdrawal symptoms have kicked in already.

  1. Papaya is delicious, it has a funky smell which is pretty intense if you’ve never handled this fruit before. I can just imagine you in the produce aisle overly excited about your new discovery, it’s good to know that I’m not the only person who has moments like that.

Cutting into it was an interesting experience…For some reason I thought it would be tough like a Butternut Squash (because they have the same shape)! Totally mistaken!

(Also the squealing in the produce aisle was nothing compared to when I saw the flesh of the papaya, that colour is gorgeous!).

  2. Ooh I’m interested to try this, I’m not sure about the spinach though? I went off veg in smoothies after the carrot, apple and celery smoothie incident of 2008. I still can’t talk about it, lol. Scarred for life!

Oh man…I’m curious as to what happened in the carrot, apple and celery smoothie incident of 2008 but terrified of the details! Eep!

As far as Spinach goes…You really can’t taste it when it’s all blitzed together 🙂

  3. Oh wow this sounds super – so healthy and energising.
Going to try this over the weekend – love a good smoothie

      Hi Laura,

Thank you for stopping by from SITS Sharefest 🙂

I’d love to know what you think of the smoothie once you’ve tried it!

  4. My Man has recently bout a weird concoction of Fruit and Veg smoothie I may have to give him this one to try. It’s pretty green though. Will he turn into the Incredible Hulk?

    • Ruebi

The smoothie was very green…Unexpectedly so, thought the papaya would have influenced the colour more.

As far as the whole Incredible Hulk situation goes, unfortunately not…That would be totally awesome though! 🙂

  5. What did it taste like lovely? I haven’t had this combo before! Try a ‘dragon fruit’- they are really strange looking, but taste yum and inside they’re really beautiful colours!! I enjoy browsing the ‘strange’ world fruits section at Tesco, but rarely buy any of it :-S I do enjoy a nice passion fruit though 🙂 X

    • Ruebi

Oooo dragon fruit! I look for these every time I go shopping…haven’t found one yet (used to see them all the time when I lived in London for some strange reason) 🙁

And I really liked the taste of the papaya, sweet but not sickly (has the texture of a melon) x
